EDC supports Town's application for Brownfields Assessment Grant

The Stonington Economic Development Commission supports the Town of Stonington’s application for a Brownfields Assessment Grant for the property located at 75 Stillman Avenue, Pawcatuck, CT. The funds will be used for assessment of the site to characterize an existing brownfield, leading to opportunities for remediation and future development on the site.

The Stonington Economic Development Commission has been working to explore re-use options for this property, a high priority for the EDC for several years. In September 2018, the EDC hosted a Community Conversation in which neighborhood residents expressed support for the town taking an active role in its redevelopment. Our commission recognizes that redevelopment of brownfield sites can be challenging but can also lead to the fulfillment of several of the community’s goals. Goals for this project include elimination of blight and public safety hazards, added tax revenue, and – most importantly – mitigation of environmental issues. These are all policies supported by the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD).

In addition, the EDC has engaged with local developers and business owners and has confirmed strong interest for economically viable potential uses.

The Brownfields Assessment Grant is a first step needed before any other actions can take place. The Commission will continue to work together with the Town and other partners on this important issue. Once completed, this important step of assessment will enable the Town to take further steps to revitalize this important property along the Wild and Scenic Pawcatuck River.
