2023 Energy Fair a big success

For five hours on March 25th, several hundred visitors to Mystic Aquarium's Milne Research Center discovered the future of alternative energy in their homes, cars, lives and towns. Featuring 20 exhibitors and 19 speakers in nine informative talks, plus a fleet of electric cars and bicycles, the 2023 Stonington Energy Fair culminated three months of hard work by two groups of Stonington volunteers.

Members of the Town's Economic Development Commission teamed with members of the Climate Change Taskforce to organize the event. According to EDC chair Kevin Bowdler, "The number of people who attended the Energy Fair demonstrated the significant interest in learning how we as individuals can help solve climate change and invest wisely in our homes and vehicles. The Energy Fair was timely as many of the new rebates and tax incentives are just being sorted out by the various industry participants. We will look forward to Stonington being more resilient in terms of energy and becoming an alternative energy center of excellence."

Attendees, mostly from Stonington, heard from speakers on a variety of topics including residential solar and geothermal energy, battery storage, heat pumps, financing, electric vehicles and home improvements for energy savings. Two popular discussion panels featured four local contractors and four homeowners, who shared their experiences on residential projects, and a well-attended talk on commercial property implementations.

The Stonington Energy Fair is expected to become an annual event, and during the rest of the year its website will be a community resource for sustainable energy and conservation technology and practices.
