Over nine tons of food waste recycled in 28 days

Stonington’s waste hauler FE Crandall Disposal delivered 18,240 lbs of food waste to the Quantum BioPower anaerobic digester plant between Jan 23rd and Feb 20th, according to Solid Waste Director Jill Senior.

And that’s only from about half the households in town that are deploying the green bag and bucket kits available from her office in Town Hall. This is a very good early success rate for the pilot program, which is entirely funded by a State of CT Sustainable Materials Management Grant.

The Solid Waste Department and Transfer Station staff have been delivering kits door to door. This is a slow process, so a fourth distribution event will be held at the Stonington Transfer Station, 151 Greenhaven Road, Pawcatuck on Saturday, February 25th from 8am – 3pm.  Kits will also be available at the Stonington Town Hall in the Solid Waste Department.

“We hope residents are motivated to support the program and stop by to pick up their food waste collection bucket and bags. Together we can make a difference!” says Senior.
