As with many New England towns, Stonington’s rich history of manufacturing is still visible on the landscape. Over the years, our mills made machine tools, textiles and food products. Some of these mills are still standing and have been repurposed to better suit today’s economy. Others remain empty and await development.

Manufacturing in the United States changed over the years. These days, it’s a smaller segment that employs fewer people, but also requires a higher level of skill and training. Manufacturing in Stonington reflects those changes. Companies with significant manufacturing employment include Davis Standard, General Dynamics, and Acme Wire. In all, according to CT Economic Resource Center (CERC), 724 manufacturing jobs can be found in Stonington. We also have many smaller niche businesses led by dynamic and creative entrepreneurs.

Stonington’s challenge is to preserve its identity while continuing to grow and attract new residents and businesses. The Stonington Economic Development Commission is dedicated to continued manufacturing success and making sure that prospective entrepreneurs are aware of all that Stonington has to offer their business and their family.
